FAQs

Do you favo(u)r British or American English?

These two versions of English differ primarily in two ways:
a) Spelling — colour vs. color; towards vs. toward; organised vs. organized; etc.
b) Punctuation —
British: The responses included “red”, “white” and “blue”.
American: The responses included “red,”
white,” and “blue”.

Do you prefer the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) or Associated Press (AP)?

Different organizations follow different editing styles, depending on the type of document being edited (technical, editorial, academic, etc.). The Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press are globally popular. Each has its own peculiarities regarding punctuation, capitalization, citations, phraseology, and so on. We frequently use these two styles with our clients; however, we’d by happy to edit according to the style you feel most comfortable with (e.g. OGA, MLA, APA, ACS, or MHRA).

Do you want a heavy, medium, or light edit?

There are three ways to approach an edit; the difference lies in the degree of alteration to the original document.

A light edit is mainly a technical edit with minimal changes made to the actual content of the document; its main aim is to “clean up” the document by correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and ensuring consistency.

In a medium edit, the editor also takes the liberty of changing certain sentence structures or phrases to add to the clarity and readability of the document; these changes are often tracked or noted so that the client can take the final call.

A heavy edit involves extensive changes and, in some cases, rewriting of the document; it may also include fact-checking of the content. The time spent (and therefore the cost) increases depending on the degree of editing required

Do you have your own house-style that you would like us to use?

Many of our clients have existent in-house styles that they like us to follow.
If you have specialized documents (medical journals, technical documents, financial reports, etc.) that have specific editing requirements, we’re well-versed in customizing our style to your unique requirements.
